I use Adobe Camera Raw to convert all of my RAW files into a common and widely-supported format so I can use them in other programs. Most people use JPEG because it is a commonly used file format with a built-in viewer, but you can also use JPEG files in Photoshop or in other applications if you like. I use RAW because I like the flexibility and I like the way the JPEG file from Camera Raw looks. I’ve also used other file formats in the past, including TIFF, but I always end up converting the RAW files back to JPEG because you can’t do nearly as much to a RAW file as you can to a JPEG.

There’s no good reason for Camera Raw to be the only RAW conversion program out there. The developers should be ashamed for failing to make RAW files easier to work with. Even though I know there are lots of other programs that can also do RAW conversion, I still use Camera Raw because it’s the best. The quality and the ease of use with the built-in controls make it the most popular RAW conversion program.

The first step for converting your raw file is to open Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and open your raw file. Simply click the tab where it says Open (Figure 1). Once you have the raw file open in Camera Raw, the next step is to convert your raw file to a JPEG. It’s really simple, just go to File > Save As, and select JPEG.

As you can see in Figure 3, there are several settings to help you get the best results. First, you can adjust the settings in the Preset list on the left. You can find a complete list of the settings in the Help file. Also, as shown in Figure 3, you can add watermark if you want. To add watermark, click the button next to the Watermark heading. You can choose what color you want to put on the image as the watermark. You can also set where you want the watermark to be placed on the image (top, bottom, left, right, etc.). In this post I will be demonstrating how to use the new Elements 14.5 Camera Raw filters. I’ll also show you how to adjust the Tool Options in Adobe Camera Raw. A major step forward in 2014 is that Camera Raw now supports Gradient Maps. These are new features that are built into Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Without a doubt, this new feature is going to change the way I shoot. At the moment I’m processing my images using a separate computer, so I’m unable to gauge the changes myself. But, I’m interested to see what happens when I print the images and try them side-by-side.

I am sure Adobe doesn’t provide a plan for regular updates, which makes it useless as anything other than a file converter. The changes to Photoshop CS6 demonstrated that Adobe could only shoot for a year or two of regular updates of any product (even the subscription one, nor the old “renew”), before it would need to patch, upgrade or re-write. Why would Canon do the same now, and why wouldn’t they stay with the more timely updates used by the professional photographers/videographers (i.e., Nikon and Sony)?

If you want to buy the Canon junk to do your photo work, your best bet is the full Photoshop and a smaller version of Lightroom. DPP does NOT compare in speed to Photoshop, and it takes 5 times the resources.

DPP saves as a JPEG, so that’s the default save format. If you run it as a RAW converter, it saves to a.crw file, and if you view it on Windows, you need to choose the.crw file type in the viewer. On Linux you must choose the.cr2 file type. I don’t think it makes a difference which file you choose though. If it doesn’t like a file type, it says so right there in the file info dialog box when you select the file. Don’t worry, DPP will save you a copy. You can always undos if you don’t like what you did. Sometimes it’s useful to preview what’s going to happen before you do it because it lets you see the image after adjustment. It may make things easier, you can see the results before having to undo all the settings. Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 Review

With the release of Photoshop CS5 Beta, Ive been using Camera Raw to test out the new beta version. In all my recent comparisons of other software products, Ive found Camera Raw to be pretty consistent with the preview and final product.

Update: A bit of confusion on this one. It seems DPP is a separate application, not a sub-option in Camera Raw. So you’ll have to have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription to use DPP as well as Camera Raw. I still stand by the review though – Camera Raw is the superior product, though if you’re a photographer with limited funds for gear you may want to try DPP as an alternative.

I was most concerned about getting the most out of the 300D I just bought (well, 300D + 17-85 IS lens). Some of the things you see as ‘basic’ in CC are like a breath of fresh air, but a lot of the more advanced features weren’t coming with the 300D, so here are my quick thoughts:

With multiple asset creation and exporting, the 300D only allows you to export to JPEG or TIFF and not all the other file formats that exist. I guess that’s because it’s not a camera primarily intended for photojournalism. Whilst you can do bulk exporting, you can’t manually add in things like EXIF GPS tag, meter settings etc. This is why a lot of people are moving to the 7D as the 300D is getting more press-aware, so you need a broader bag of photo tools. You get a lot of extra stuff with Camera Raw, including things like RAW support, direct camera support as well as stuff like multiple asset exporting. Basically, if you need to be able to edit on the fly as you shoot, Camera Raw is the way to go.
