I use Adobe Camera Raw to convert all of my RAW files into a common and widely-supported format so I can use them in other programs. Most people use JPEG because it is a commonly used file format with a built-in viewer, but you can also use JPEG files in Photoshop or in other applications if you like. I use RAW because I like the flexibility and I like the way the JPEG file from Camera Raw looks. I’ve also used other file formats in the past, including TIFF, but I always end up converting the RAW files back to JPEG because you can’t do nearly as much to a RAW file as you can to a JPEG.
There’s no good reason for Camera Raw to be the only RAW conversion program out there. The developers should be ashamed for failing to make RAW files easier to work with. You don’t need to re-compute your RAW file to convert it, you don’t need to do anything special to it, and it will work just the same as if it was in a JPEG file format.
Even though I know there are lots of other programs that can also do RAW conversion, I still use Camera Raw because it’s the best. The quality and the ease of use with the built-in controls make it the most popular RAW conversion program.
The first step for converting your raw file is to open Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and open your raw file. Simply click the tab where it says Open (Figure 1). Once you have the raw file open in Camera Raw, the next step is to convert your raw file to a JPEG. It’s really simple, just go to File > Save As, and select JPEG.
As you can see in Figure 3, there are several settings to help you get the best results. First, you can adjust the settings in the Preset list on the left. You can find a complete list of the settings in the Help file. Also, as shown in Figure 3, you can add watermark if you want. To add watermark, click the button next to the Watermark heading. You can choose what color you want to put on the image as the watermark. You can also set where you want the watermark to be placed on the image (top, bottom, left, right, etc.). You can edit the title of the watermark and a few other settings.

The Smart Crop appears more intelligent.
I don’t have much more to say about this. If I get a better image from a RAW file, I will say more.
Hint: Try to remove elements as you move the crop box.
1. Powerful organization on every level – easy access to every metadata tag, RAW converter and editing option – all at once, no matter how deeply nested in layers. When you use the regular Adobe menus, you may have to click 5-6 menu items to get there. With the new organization, you can get there in one click. You have one place to see and get everything, at any time.
2. Selective color editing – to make any changes to certain channel(s), for better control, without changing the other channels. This is the feature which you have asked about several times already, and I’d like to make an additional point about it: Yes, some features, like the adjustment brush are now much faster to use, and look better when creating detail and texture effects. I also find them easier to handle and more intuitive in this version – especially when changing the Curves on a channel or mask-based channel. Anything that does make things better and faster, is on top of the list!
3. Convenient multi-select. This one is great. With the single click, you can select more than one image at a time. And even better, every image gets enhanced with the same settings! No duplicated work, no confusion about which change you want to apply, no missed opportunities. One click, two steps, done!
High Dynamic Range (HDR) and HDR Tone Mapping Pro. Both of these new features bring out amazing detail and colors from a light controlled scene. HDR is a basic tone mapping algorithm that allows you to combine images, where there is some light and some dark from bracketed exposures.

What we’re going to do, is just reveal the list of adjustments by one click and then hide them back again. I will be hiding a very commonly used set of Camera Raw settings from the main buttons. In this post I will be demonstrating how to use the new Elements 14.5 Camera Raw filters. I’ll also show you how to adjust the Tool Options in Adobe Camera Raw. A major step forward in 2014 is that Camera Raw now supports Gradient Maps. These are new features that are built into Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Camera Raw has just released an update to make it easier for new users to learn and for old users to understand. In this post I’ll review some of the new features and explain how to use them.
The RAW file is the digital negative. Since the RAW file contains the original image, it lets users make any changes they want to the original. It is the original image on a different level.
In the olden days, photographers werent even allowed to take photos. After some time, photographers started to process their images using manual tweaking (developing negatives and prints) to achieve the best possible images. The advent of digital cameras led to the rise of the digital negative or RAW file. The RAW file itself, which contains the original photograph, offers more possibilities than the traditional JPEG or TIFF file because there are more bits in it.
As of yet the latest version of Photoshop CC (2015 and CC 2017) has yet to be released, so to make sure of our compatibility we need to pay attention to the table of contents within the Adobe Camera Raw application.

The number of layers will be returned to the baseline. In this example, the layers being restored are the eyes of the face and the teeth, which are lost in the previous image. Toothed locks are available if you use the Layers panel to have Adobe Camera Raw remove the image layers and continue with the other ones.
Improved smart object performance This update brings a big improvement in performance when smart objects are being used. Smart Objects contain layers which may be different in size from the main layers. There is very little which can be done about this until the actual undo step occurs, which takes about 1-2 minutes per clip. This update adds intelligent scripting to the Undo Manager to maintain a consistent performance when multiple smart object objects are being manipulated.
Restore to the original workspace When working in a creative workspace, such as Aperture, Lightroom or Photoshop, there is a chance that a file will be saved on to a different file. This can cause problem if a version change occurs in the middle of a work flow because it can corrupt files with different versions. With this update, Adobe Camera Raw will automatically restore a file to the version of the file that was used when the file was first opened.
Auto flatten with a 3pix Radius If you are using Auto-Flatten to hide the background, you can now select a 3-pixel radius to automatically restore the background to the base layer and as the next step for Auto-Flatten to use. For instance, if the background is not displaying and you select an Auto-Flatten option, then the background will be restored.
Decrease shadow pixel count This update has a new command in the Shadows panel which will resize and/or flatten shadows on the selected layer.
What is Adobe Camera Raw 14.5?
Without a doubt, this new feature is going to change the way I shoot. At the moment I’m processing my images using a separate computer, so I’m unable to gauge the changes myself. But, I’m interested to see what happens when I print the images and try them side-by-side.
• ACR 14.5 comes with every new Canon Camera Body as a camera profile, including the EOS M3.
• You can also add newer Canon APS-C and Micro Four-Thirds sensors as additional camera profiles.
• Additional sensor types have also been added to the studio profiles.
I am seeing that the free RAW Converter program, Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 download free, has been recently released. Is that program re-branded or does Canon now sell it, thereby taking the retail price off the table? How does it compare to DPP?
I am sure Adobe doesn’t provide a plan for regular updates, which makes it useless as anything other than a file converter. The changes to Photoshop CS6 demonstrated that Adobe could only shoot for a year or two of regular updates of any product (even the subscription one, nor the old “renew”), before it would need to patch, upgrade or re-write. Why would Canon do the same now, and why wouldn’t they stay with the more timely updates used by the professional photographers/videographers (i.e., Nikon and Sony)?
If you want to buy the Canon junk to do your photo work, your best bet is the full Photoshop and a smaller version of Lightroom. DPP does NOT compare in speed to Photoshop, and it takes 5 times the resources.
DPP saves as a JPEG, so that’s the default save format. If you run it as a RAW converter, it saves to a.crw file, and if you view it on Windows, you need to choose the.crw file type in the viewer. On Linux you must choose the.cr2 file type. I don’t think it makes a difference which file you choose though. If it doesn’t like a file type, it says so right there in the file info dialog box when you select the file. Don’t worry, DPP will save you a copy. You can always undos if you don’t like what you did. Sometimes it’s useful to preview what’s going to happen before you do it because it lets you see the image after adjustment. It may make things easier, you can see the results before having to undo all the settings. Also, DPP offers auto-layer correction, so you don’t have to create a separate layer for each area you want to correct. To learn how to get better and faster work results with DPP, read this book:
Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 Review
With the release of Photoshop CS5 Beta, Ive been using Camera Raw to test out the new beta version. In all my recent comparisons of other software products, Ive found Camera Raw to be pretty consistent with the preview and final product.
Update: A bit of confusion on this one. It seems DPP is a separate application, not a sub-option in Camera Raw. So you’ll have to have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription to use DPP as well as Camera Raw. I still stand by the review though – Camera Raw is the superior product, though if you’re a photographer with limited funds for gear you may want to try DPP as an alternative.
I was most concerned about getting the most out of the 300D I just bought (well, 300D + 17-85 IS lens). Some of the things you see as ‘basic’ in CC are like a breath of fresh air, but a lot of the more advanced features weren’t coming with the 300D, so here are my quick thoughts:
With multiple asset creation and exporting, the 300D only allows you to export to JPEG or TIFF and not all the other file formats that exist. I guess that’s because it’s not a camera primarily intended for photojournalism. Whilst you can do bulk exporting, you can’t manually add in things like EXIF GPS tag, meter settings etc. This is why a lot of people are moving to the 7D as the 300D is getting more press-aware, so you need a broader bag of photo tools. You get a lot of extra stuff with Camera Raw, including things like RAW support, direct camera support as well as stuff like multiple asset exporting. Basically, if you need to be able to edit on the fly as you shoot, Camera Raw is the way to go.
What is Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 good for?
Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 has a wide range of free Photoshop color correction tools. These tools allow you to make changes to the colors in your photos and have more control when you do so than in Photoshop. These tools include three separate color correction tools, which are called “Curves”, “Crop”, and “Exposure”.
The Curves tool adjusts your image’s colors by applying nonlinear, high-precision control over specific regions of your image. You have total control over the curves in your image, so you can adjust the contrast of the image from white to black or black to white, as well as any other range of gray. With the curves, you can make big changes to specific portions of the image easily.
By the end of this lesson, you will:
- Export your best photography to the web and mobile
- Get creative by using selective color tools and image corrections
- Learn to convert your images to other formats and resize them
Specifically, I will explain what to do when your camera isn’t accurate, how to clean up your image after you’ve taken a picture, and how to use the RAW format to produce more professional images in less time. If you’re curious about how to make creative edits in Photoshop, then you’ll love this lesson. And if you already use Adobe Camera Raw, then you’ll learn what settings to change, what effects to apply, how to edit on different layers, and how to fix common problems. Once you’re done, you will have mastered the fundamentals of the RAW format and how to utilize those fundamentals to make every image look great, regardless of your camera.
